Okay. I've had danmaku thrown at me before. The only difference is that I know how to fight back this time.
Well, that and I'm fighting the literal guardian of the entire world. Semantics! Let's do this! Twirling her gohei once, she starts to move to the side, opening the match with a salvo of her amulets. I respond by moving in the opposite direction and
wait are they following me? Gah! They narrowly pass me by and I finally remember maybe I should try actually shooting back. I throw a palm out and make a sharp little hook. When I let go a little burning dot is tethered to it, and the whole thing flies off, all in the span of about a quarter-second. I can do this! More! More shots!
We quickly settle into a rhythm, as she tries to get some distance and I keep closing in so I can get past those homing seals. Reimu has a graceful sort of movement, relatively slow, with practiced conversation of energy. To keep up with her (stupid longer legs), I find myself having to run flat out, and it's playing hell with my knee. All right, Reimu, let's try out a card. Raising it high, I feel my fingers tingle as it aglow, the magic scribing itself in my mind, only awaiting an incantation to complete it. "Nature's Whimsy--!"
?Growth Spurt? With a sweep of my hand, I make three wide arcs of evenly-spaced shots in succession. Reimu prepares to fire a counter-barrage when the magic blooms. A handful of the orbs expand and collide with their fellows, and an orderly line becomes a minefield as they scatter every which-way, like marbles struck out of the circle. Two larger spheres connect and bounce, one angled perfectly for Reimu. It almost lazily rolls for her, and I swear I'm going to get her--!
When she does, of all things, a somersault over it. Landing in a crouch, she suddenly takes off like a rocket
right for me oh shi- I leap to the side and tuck as she brings her gohei down where my head was. Is the--yes, the card's still going! I quickly throw up another wave of green and she backs off, giving me some breathing room. Okay, right, duels can get physical. Avoid the miko death stick. I spin and make tracks as she dances between two of the projectiles the instant there's enough room for her. As she chases me she launches a volley hot on my heels. Only just manage to dive in time as a wave of needles flies over me. Scrabbling back up, Reimu's advance is slowed as another few orbs from Growth Spurt cut her off. I'm starting to get a bit tired--I think the card is slowing me up. Gently I ease back down and the card's glow fades as Reimu clears the last of the projectiles.
Okay, deep breath. What did you learn? She moves slow but steady, and can be quick when she wants to. Healthy mix of danmaku, and she looks like she can handle that gohei. Slipping Growth Spurt back into my pocket, still warm, I carefully pull another up just ahead of its fellows for the start of the next round.
This time I start the fireworks, launching a storm of little bullets as I charge in. Reimu flings a handful of needles as she jogs in, slapping most of the bullets out of the air. The scant handful she misses in turn miss her. I slide as she goes for an overhead swing, passing under her. I use my momentum to kip up and put hand to hilt as she wheels back 'round for another joust.
The jian comes up this time, meeting her ... stick with a sharp clack. I slide to one side as she tries to use her size and weight to break my block, slipping free and giving me a brief opening at her side. She quickly reverses momentum and parries the strike, pushing me back with it. I catch myself--on my bad leg, buckling just slightly. Argh--! She comes in, sensing the kill--
Not this time. Childhood Play ?Stop Hitting Yourself? Practically flying to block of its own accord, sword meets gohei, trailing energy. The sound ebbs away and then snaps back with a whine as my hand comes up, leaving me in an instant of freefall. With a
crack I feel my fist connect, shocks running up my arm as Reimu just manages to throw up a shimmering orange wall.
Right. Maiden of
barriers. Damn it. I manage to catch myself as I land and Reimu flies back from the force of my punch...
And fires a point-blank volley of seals as she does. With as much dignity as I can muster, I explode.
Coughing as I shake the soot off, Reimu strides up, grinning. "That was pretty good, for a first time."
"Hackpthanks. Cff."
"I had a lot of fun, actually, it's been a while since I've done that. What did you think?"
"I didn't expect that much running. Made things a lot harder."
"Don't worry, you'll be flying soon--again," she adds quickly. "You've definitely got the feel for dueling now." Yeah, well, I still got blown up.
"...It's getting late. You should probably head home now to get there before nightfall." Oof, yeah. I do not like being in that forest at night. "Of course, you're welcome to stay here again." Is it me, or did she get a lot nicer after she kicked my ass?
[ ] Sure, saves me a late walk through the woods and my leg's still achey.
[ ] Nah, better just book it home.
