It turns out that she was right-- After a minute or so more flying and a wide river comes into view. One side of the brook is rocky while the other is plain grass. All the trees on either side of it are large and look healthier than any other of the wildlife down here.

Behind us, a splash is heard.

Marisa whips her head back as if on instinct. "Don't look now, but we've got company."

"What do we do? Do they look hostile? Should we fight?" I ask, not looking back.

"I bet we could lose 'em between the large trees. Then again, maybe they just want to talk? We shouldn't assume everyone we meet is a bad guy!" Marisa suggests, a noticeable amount of sarcasm in her voice. "On the other hand, we should assume that everyone we meet on this mountain is. I personally think I should just turn around and kick 'er ass, but I'm down for whatever you think we should do."

"Oh, um, ha ha, sorry," she grins. "It's just been so long since I've actually seen a human."

Her expression changes instantaneously. "What? Ah, um, I, I see..." Nitori pulls on her pony tails, her face a bright red.

The wind begins to pick up as we enter a clearing in the woods. The river grows into a large, round lake with a waterfall on the far side.

"Were the falls always this big?" Marisa asks, looking up the face of the cliff.

"No," the leader from before says. "It's just recently increased in size, friend. I'm not sure what's causing it, but it definitely benefits us Kappa!"

"So you figure the shrine's at the top of this cliff?" I ask looking up as well. I can't even see the top of this thing.

"Close to it!" He exclaims. "The waterfall will provide the perfect cover from the Tengu, so if we just swim inside it we should be fine."

Swim up the waterfall? Easier said than done. "I don't think I'm that strong of a swimmer..." I object, hoping for another way. "And why do we have to hide? I thought you said you guys were stronger than the tengu."

"What Yoshio said," Marisa nods. "Can't we just fly up?"

He sighs. "The cover is just a bonus-- swimming is way faster than flying. For us, at least. You guys can go ahead and fly in front of the waterfall if you want, or just look for another route."

"Feh, we'll see about that," he scoffs, diving into the water. A silhouette shoots up the waterfall as the others dive in as well.

"Yeah, whatever!" Marisa shouts, though I doubt they can hear her. "Have a head start! Not like it'll change anything!"

"Here, take this and slap it on the back of my broom," Marisa orders, handing me that laser-shooting thing from this morning.

"Why? What's this supposed to do?" I ask even though I already have a pretty good idea of exactly what it's going to do.

"It'll make us go all 'pchooo' up the waterfall," Marisa explains. "Pretty much the fastest way to travel!"

The octagonal piece of wood gives off a dim glow and starts to hum lightly. I slam the end of the broom with it and shout, "OK! It's on," and Marisa cocks the broom back so it's parallel with the waterfall. She brings her body in close as I struggle to stay on.

The humming gets louder and louder until eventually a brilliant array of lights shoot out from behind us, shaking the broom as we fire up the waterfall. It's short lived, though-- it ends almost as soon as it starts, acting as more of a quick boost rather than our engine. Marisa laughs as we catch up with their silhouettes in no time at all.

"Ain't no lane but the fast lane," Marisa shouts back at them.

As if on cue, a large splash comes from below us. Looking down, I see two figures falling out the waterfall. Well... I'm not sure if I'd say they're both falling. It looks like someone tackled one of the swimmers out of the water.

Marisa slows down for a second as we look back together.

Nitori! Nitori was the one pushed out! A small wail is barely heard above the roaring waterfall as she plummets to the surface of the water. I can't tell who it is that pushed her out, but it's definitely not someone we know.

And yet I get the feeling it's not in the mood for introductions.

i reach down for her and she extends her arm in response. i grab her forearm and she does the same. i kick and kick while using my other arm to push us up towards the surface. we're not very far down but, damn, she's heavy. what's even in that backpack?
